Shoulder problems

Let’s face it. At one stage or another during your training program, you may experience some form of niggle, injury, pain or minor tear! One of the most common can occur around the shoulder. Don’t despair, read on for a few tips on what to do!

The shoulder joint sacrifices stability for mobility, therefore is can create varied & large movements, however the ability to do this alters it’s stability & strength capabilities.

If you feel the slightest “niggle” in your shoulder, you should NOT WORK THROUGH IT! It is amazing how many people (clients included) will continue to lift through a set with pain or discomfort because they do not want to stop, disappoint their trainer, or are hungry for the results.

If you feel any pain or discomfort:

Step 1: Seek advice. Your trainer is your first step, if they are unable to diagnose, they will refer. I have rehabbed and pre-habed (discussed soon) hundreds of shoulders, so email / call me (m) 412-999-656 right NOW for some advice. Alternatively we recommend Baroona Road Physiotherapy with Michael Ridgeway & his experienced team that provide expert care.

Step 2: Pre-hab – therefore BEFORE any pain arrives, make sure that you are doing adequate postural aligning exercises. They are the tiny ones that seem to really burn! Again chat to your trainer for the most appropriate ones.

Generally speaking, most rehab processes involve the correct strengthening exercises, appropriate stretches, massage & manipulation (in some cases) and supplementing with Glucosamine 1500-2000mg / day.

If you are unsure, then ask.

Happy lifting
